Defence Locations
The table at right lists all of the locations given in the database with the number of features associated with each.
The nearest town/hamlet or named area on the map has been used as a locator as opposed to the name of a farm; at least one farm has been found to have changed its name since 1940, leading to confusion.

Defence Types
The table at left gives the frequency of the different types of defence work currently in the database.
It should be noted that the Defence Type entries are at present entered using natural language, in many cases taken from the original document entry, until the precise nature of the feature is determined.
For example, the 'Defended Walled Garden' is very likely to comprise loopholed walls, although this is not specifically expressed. Further research may reveal exactly how the area was defended and the nomenclature amended accordingly.
As the project progresses, a controlled vocabulary based on existing entries will be introduced, as the potential for duplication of sites already exists within the database. The 'Vickers MG Positions' will probably be found to coincide with pillbox locations in some cases.
Entries such as 'Defended Post', 'Sandbagged Position', 'Cliff Post' and 'M.G. Post' will eventually be merged under a single heading along the lines of 'Defence Post'.
It will also be noted that some defence types currently have both a singular and plural entry, e.g. 'Defended Building' and 'Defended Buildings'. The plural form is used to record the existence of features whose exact number and/or location are not given, or where a group of similar features cannot usefully be distinguished to warrant creating separate entries for, e.g. 'four slit trenches.'
A slight transgression of the above rule occasionally occurs with more distinguishable features such as pillboxes. In some cases, a document may refer to 'pillboxes at....' without specifying how many. In such cases, the plurality is taken to indicate at least two, in which case two identical records have been created and the 'Historian's Comments' will indicate that this has happened.
