Pillboxopedia

Pillboxopedia is a jargon-busting tool of terms relating to UK anti-invasion defences of World War Two.

War diary

A record of events kept by all units from the point of mobilisation. A diary's contents vary enormously from unit to unit; some give detailed entries by the hour on a daily basis while others merely summarise events on a weekly/monthly basis.

Follow me on Twitter

The Defence of East Sussex Project is now on Twitter! I've set up an account for two reasons; firstly, to feed in to an established communications medium and secondly to cover a gap in my blogging.

The latter, to be honest, is the main reason, as it seems to take me forever to knock out a post on the blog nowadays. It's not because I'm not doing anything worth blogging - far from it, as I'm having a spell of high activity in the field, but it's not being followed up by time at the keyboard. This has lead to people asking if I'm still doing my research - the answer is definitely yes!

I had previously considered constructing my own 'micro-blog' system to enable me to post short snippets of data about what I'm up to but I thought I'd hook up with Twitter instead as it's an established global system that allows users to keep abreast of my updates.

As you can see below, my profile name is sussexPillbox: http://twitter.com/sussexPillbox

Twitter

I've incorporated a Twitter feed on the homepage, cunningly displayed as a message form of the type frequently encountered in a war diary, particularly at around the time of a major unit relocation or training exercise.

I have to confess to still be finding my way with things, such as my style and fequency of posting; although I do something related to the Project every day, hourly sitreps are not going to set the Internet alight with excitement.

Is this just a fad and will it last? I have no idea - if it doesn't take off, then it may sink without trace, otherwise we'll just have to see how things go!
