Just a flying visit to tie up a few loose ends; in order to get to grips with the minutiae of Air Raid Precautions matters, I've been looking at various Training Bulletins, Industrial Bulletins and Equipment Bulletins, which contain a vast wealth of information.

I'm also going to venture into a new area this afternoon, namely that of family history. My sister has been cultivating the family tree for some years now, and has come across mention of an ancestor, one William John Hensworth HEMSLEY, who was a Sergeant-Major in the Royal Artillery in the 1850's. We have very little other detail, except that he married a Mary GOODWIN early in 1841 and they had a son, Thomas Frederick HEMSLEY about mid-1857 whilst living at Woolwich Dockyard.

I've been detailed to look into the issue while I'm here at Kew. This means getting myself familiar with the microfiche reading room, but I just have a funny feeling that I may not get as far as looking at a fiche unless the process of index-trawling proves as simple as I hope it will be...

My reader's ticket expired today and so I now have a very snazzy photo-ID card; I also had to re-register my digital camera and have the ID card endorsed with a foil sticker to indicate as much. This reminded me that I promised in a previous blog that I was going to write up some notes on photographing documents. I will get round to it; I may do something spanning several blogs to make things easier.

18:30 update

It was as I feared in the microfiche reading room; I couldn't find any entries relating to William Hemsley in the various indices, but did have limited success with another military ancestor, a Major Alexander Henry Gibbs ANTON of 2nd Battalion, Connaught Rangers, who died in 1893 at the age of 41. I traced part of his career using the Army List. I found some fascinating photographs in the attic yesterday, so may post a blog on the subject.
